Liz Blume explores flowers and fruits…

While walking in the streets of Nice you are greeted with the sweet smell of flowers and a long line of tents. The flower market is not only filled with the brightest flowers but also with the freshest produce and other miscellaneous goods. Early in the morning you will find everyone setting their stations up. Florists make different bundles of flowers dropping their dark green stems into vases. The flower arrangements in the sun looked like a colorful see through piece of cloth since they were so silky to the touch. As you walk in further and further through the tents you see the freshest fruits. The sweet aromas of citrus sweep into your nose almost giving you a taste of the fruit. After each bite of a strawberry your taste buds are awoken by the sweetest fruit you will ever taste…

Victoria Perkins inhales the odors of spices and imagines dishes to create with these scents…

Watching the spice and flower market being set up at 7 in the morning is definitely a sight to see.  All of the vibrant yellows, purples, and reds of the flowers stand out even more with the pink sunrise in the background.  The sun just catches the deep reds of the paprika in a spice stall near by and gives a deep glow to the sweet powder.  The merchants are working hard to set up their striped tents and assortments of knick-knacks like nutmeg graters and spice grinders.  The deep smell coming off of each smell was different every time.  If you point your nose to the left you may smell curry powder or fresh basil.  If you point it to the right you may smell fresh wild mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes.  The smells of each ingredient almost create an earthy savory meal on their own.  I imagined sautéed oyster mushrooms, asparagus, and sundried tomatoes, spiced with a little nutmeg from the stall next-door on top of a whole roasted chicken made across the street.
