Our team has begun the journey to NYC for Sunday’s orientation at the Beard Foundation. A final wine highlight from week 3 in Florence is shared by Special Event Management and PR Team Member Rachel Murphy. Salcheto is a very unique wine producer that we are proud to feature at our Beard dinner. Keep reading to learn more about each of the producers being highlighted next week at our events.
Salcheto believes in the synergy between earth, all growing things, including man. They use non-invasive organic and biodynamic growing methods for their production of grapes and wine. Ultimately Salcheto’s goal for their vineyards and production is to work in an environmentally responsible manner.
The name of the winery comes from the river that flows through part of their 81 acre vineyards, Salcheto. It takes ten years in order to grow a mature vineyard and a great tasting grape, some vines even longer. The vineyards are on top of one of the highest elevations in Montepulciano, having over 113 acres of property. Montepulciano is a wine territory about 75 miles away from Florence, Italy, that has been producing wines in the area for over five hundred years. It was settled in the early third or fourth century and was mentioned for its high quality in wine. In the very center of Salcheto’s property is the farmhouse dating back to farmers who utilized it in the 1400s. The new cellar allows the producer to create wines in a very green manner by starting the process at the top of the facility, using gravity to transfer to each stage of fermentation of the grape. When it is time to harvest the grapes, they are all handpicked and could take up to three times to complete a thorough picking.
Most of the Salcheto vineyards contain the varietal Prugnolo Gentile, which is a clone of the Sangiovese grape used to make the Vino Nobile de Montepulciano. Salcheto also produces varietals of Canaiolo, Mammolo, Colorino, and Merlot that are grown in specific areas of the vineyards since 1999. The first part of the vineyards extends for 38 acres near their farmhouse. Another 26-acre area in Chiusi, 8 miles from Salcheto, is where Salcheto produces the Chianti Colli Senesi and Pigliatello sweet wine.
Salcheto Wines will be featured at the reception, antipasti, primo, and dessert courses of our James Beard Foundation Dinner on October 27, 2012. We will be serving a Rosato di Toscana IGT 2007, Rosso di Montepuciano DOC 2010, Vino Nobile di Montepuciano DOCG 2009, and a Pigliatello di Toscana IGT 2007.
